The seedy side of gardening

Posted on January 20, 2024 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Don’t let these rainy winter days get your down — let your imagination go wild with thoughts of spring.

Which plants are best started indoors, and which prefer to be sown directly? When should you start?

The Valley of the Moon Garden Club (VOMGC) digs in, hosting Ellyn Mavalwalla, manager of The Seed Bank in Petaluma, for a discussion on all things seeds on Thursday, February 1, 2024.

Ellyn’s (self-proclaimed) “black thumb” turned green after something “just clicked” in 2006 and her garden began to thrive. She took a part time job at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds store in Connecticut that blossomed into her opening a garden shop in 2014.

In 2016 she moved to Petaluma and has been managing the Seed Bank ever since. Ellyn holds three Master Gardener badges, has an addiction to gardening books, and is a passionate educator to both new and experienced gardeners.

Join the VOMGC meeting at the Burlingame Hall at First Congregation Church, 252 W Spain St, in Sonoma. Meet and greet time is 6:30 p.m. where you can mingle with fellow gardening enthusiasts. At 7 p.m. Ellyn will share her insights leaving plenty of time for questions. Members attend free and guests/visitors are asked for a $5 donation, which can be applied to membership ($25/yr). The evening includes a seed raffle and refreshments.
