Safe drinking water is something we all want and need. Each year, a water quality report is produced by the City of Sonoma listing the amount of potentially dangerous trace chemicals or contaminants found.
While the City of Sonoma operates a number of groundwater wells, the vast majority of the potable water used in the city comes from the Russian River, piped down the valley through a single conduit. Seepage of chemicals like arsenic into the water distribution system occur due to cracks in aging delivery pipes running through mineral deposits or other sources. Measurements of residues or traces of added chemicals, like Flouride, are also taken and reported.
Along with roughly ten other entities which contract with Sonoma Water, the County’s water agency, the city pays for water based on a contract price. Storage tanks on the hillside operated by the city store water for drinking and fire suppression. Essentially a gravity-fed system, the city’s Water Department maintains the pipes and infrastructure to deliver water to its customers, and budgets funds for capital improvements and repairs to the system.
The City of Sonoma’s 2023 Water Quality Report is now available online in English, ADA Accessible and Spanish. To request a printed copy, please contact the City of Sonoma Public Works Department Water Supervisor, Terrence Erickson, by calling 707-933-2231 or emailing terickson@sonomacity.org.
