The Performance of Mictlan was spectacular

Dear Sun,

The performance of Mictlan at Sebastiani Theater was spectacular. The dancing, music and costumes were incredibly moving, colorful and uplifting. It was the best live show I think I’ve ever seen in Sonoma. I was so impressed by the talented young people–from the adorable monarch girls to the young women dancing their hearts out in full body skeleton suits, bright flowing skirts and masks adorned with roses and fabric braids. The “next gen” mariachi band of guitarists, violinists, and vocalists played and sang with flair and confidence. We clapped and woo-hooed and trilled in excitement.  Watching the Dance of the Deer by a single male dancer quieted the spellbound crowd and seemed to carry the packed theater into an ancient and primal ritual. Wow.

As I am a white Baby Boomer who doesn’t speak Spanish, I didn’t get all the nuances of the Aztec legend being enacted, but that didn’t matter. I was so impressed and left the theater feeling great hope and happiness thinking that the artists, musicians and their families were taking Sonoma Valley and perhaps our world in a positive and buoyant direction. Thanks to the Sun for promoting the show and for Anna Pier’s article about Mictlan Director Victor Ferrer and Associate Director Vanessa Carrillo in the Oct. 3 issue. Bravo to all!
