Sonoma’s generosity has given an ambulance wings! The donated ambulance arrived in Kaniv, Ukraine on November 1st after traveling 6,145 miles by truck, train and ship across countless borders to finally arrive.
The Ambulance With Wings is a perfect example of why Sister Cities International was established in the 1950’s by then president Dwight D. Eisenhower who, after witnessing the horrors of World War II said that only when people meet each other face to face will there be peace and understanding among nations. The Sister Cities ambulance project proves that good intentions, hard work, believing that change is possible and trusting in the goodness of others can create miracles.
The photo of a small child sitting in the back of Sonoma’s bright red ambulance holding a “To Kaniv with Love” sticker tells the whole story. The ambulance that saved so many lives in Sonoma now has a renewed life in war-torn Ukraine where it will continue saving the lives of our friends in Kaniv.
As a result of Sonoma’s generosity, the Sonoma Sister Cities/Kaniv Committee was able to ship the ambulance filled with medical supplies as well as send additional money to purchase large commercial re-chargeable back-up batteries to be placed in schools and public buildings which will provide light and heat in winter during wartime blackouts. The Light in the Darkness batteries project is another example of international cooperation, this time with the help from the Rotary Clubs of Cherkassy, Ukraine and Santa Rosa County, The Sonoma Sister Cities Association and the community.
