Southern California Natives Reveal Their Secret New Things to Do and Places to Go

By Catalina Lara

Despite being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, with visitor rates reaching roughly 29 million people in 2020, L.A. can be an intimidating city to navigate alone. Luckily, Southern California natives and residents have offered up their favorite things to do and places to go in the City of Angels.

Fun On-the-Go

Proud So-Cal native Jamie Steigerwald, Chief Marketing Officer at Nug Avenue, a marijuana delivery service based in L.A., has praised Los Angeles as the largest legal marijuana destination in the U.S. for adults 21 and over. Since its legalization in California nearly five years ago, L.A has attracted tourists looking to purchase high-quality flowers and edibles.

“Imagine the fun you’ll have, sighting celebrities in Hollywood or getting a tan at the beach – while stoned,” said Steigerwald. “If you don’t want to waste time tracking down a dispensary, you can order online from delivery services like Nug Avenue. We’ll hand-deliver your high to your hotel in a discreet pouch the very same day.”

A Seafood Lover’s Dream

L.A. native Marlo Richardson, owner and founder of the digital platform Business Bullish, suggests visiting the variety of local beaches in Southern California for a relaxing picnic or change of scenery.

“There’s nothing better than the fresh air of Southern California‘s coastal areas,” said Richardson. “Malibu beach is one of my favorite areas to frequent because there are many restaurants located near the water.”

Richardson also encourages L.A’s visitors to dine at a seafood restaurant located along the Pacific coast. After all, there’s nothing better than enjoying fresh sushi and a glass of wine along with a beautiful view.

An Endless Variety of Activities

California native Nicholas Mathews says it’s virtually impossible to be bored in L.A. due to its wide variety of activities.

“I love hiking through the canyons, breathtaking views,” Mathews, one of the founders of Stillwater Behavioral Health, said. “Any time there is a new exhibit at the Petersen Auto museum I definitely check it out. Currently the Ronald Reagan Library has a fantastic exhibit on the FBI’s History that is definitely worth seeing.” The exhibit runs until January 9, 2022.

An Abundance of Budget Friendly Options

Will Saunders, Los Angeles resident and member of the band Loser Company, states that the best things to do in L.A, are oftentimes free – or very close to it.

“We love the beaches, we love hiking the trails, we love to post-up somewhere and people-watch,” said Saunders.

“Don’t forget about playing music either,” said Saunders. “And if playing music isn’t your forte, there are countless places to see it live!” What better way to unwind after a long week?

A Musician’s Paradise

Live music also tops Americana performer Taylor Hungerford’s list. Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, his stage name is Tar & Flowers. For him, one of the best places to see live music is on Sundays during the summer at The Echo.

“It’s called Grand Ole Echo,” Hungerford said. “It’s always a welcoming atmosphere. There are always children running around, and everyone is very nice. One of the best spots to hang out in L.A.!”

San Clemente

The lead vocalist of the band Home is West says that San Clemente is the place to be.

“San Clemente is the prettiest beach city in Southern California,” he said. “Shopping at the numerous boutiques, enjoying beach activities, including surfing one of the best surf spots in the country, fishing off of the pier, hiking/biking along the beach trail, eating at casual and fine-dining restaurants, tastings at local breweries and urban wineries, visiting the art gallery to name a few [things to do]. San Clemente is a very walkable town. You can walk from the beach to downtown in less than 10 minutes.”

San Clemente also offers a free shuttle during the summer.

Not only is Southern California a cultural hotspot, filled with aspiring artists and trendsetters, but also it is packed with limitless possibilities just waiting to be explored. There’s no question about it, L.A. is the place to go.
