Volunteers needed for SDC's performance of 'The Music Man'

Sonoma Developmental Center’s (SDC) Performing Arts Company seeks volunteers for this year’s performance of “The Music Man.”
The Performing Arts Company, a committee made up of SDC employees and cast members who live at SDC, was founded in 2005 as a way to involve the individuals who live at the center in a meaningful theatrical experience. Anyone living at the facility is welcomed to audition and is guaranteed a part in the play.
In 2005, the inaugural production was “Grease” and in 2006 it was “Best Of Broadway”, which featured a variety of Broadway hits. In talking with Melodie Mitchell, Chairperson of the committee and Director of the plays, the idea of putting on a play by and for the individuals who live SDC came about because, “It seemed like the perfect time. The plays fit the needs of the people living here, with lots of music they would enjoy.”
Open auditions for this year’s play began in early spring, with rehearsals occurring throughout the summer months, and live performances scheduled in late September. The cast is comprised of approximately 40 singers, dancers, actors and musicians. Volunteers are needed for this year’s performance of “The Music Man”, to assist backstage with line rehearsal, props, costumes, and more.

Sonoma Developmental Center is the oldest and largest facility in California established specifically for serving the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and is one of five developmental centers operated by the Department of Developmental Services. Services to these individuals are provided through contracts with twenty-one non-profit regional centers that are geographically situated with defined “catchment” areas. The Department also operates two state-operated community residential facilities.
