This Giving Tuesday, Help Keep the SUN Shining

We think the late Val Robichaud would be pleased. Since June, when we published the first edition of the Sonoma Valley Sun newspaper under the new management team of David Bolling, Larry Barnett, Anna Pier, and Alyssa Conder, we’ve made steady progress.

The number of pages, amount of paid advertising, and contributor list have all increased significantly. We’ve upgraded our paper stock to a brighter, whiter type. Our website has been completely revamped and is updated daily. We’re now using the most environmentally responsible printer in Northern California. We also now operate as a nonprofit organization.

With that said, we have nevertheless encountered the primary reason so many local newspaper publications have ceased publication: it’s very expensive. Advertising income covers the cost of printing and print preparation, but little more than that, and many businesses and nonprofits don’t pay for print advertising at all anymore. Moreover, ad revenue is taxable, and we must pay 29% on every dollar. Our management team does it all – reporting, editing, ad sales, bookkeeping, distribution – but it is basically an unpaid, volunteer effort at this point. That can’t go on forever.

We’ve applied for and received two small grants so far, and have applications in for more. The grants have helped, and will be the focus of our attention going forward. But grant proposals are very time consuming and we’re stretched thin already. Our advertising rates will be increased in the new year, as well.

So, in addition to thanking you for your past support, this letter is to ask you for more help. If you can make another donation, we can start the next year better prepared.
