Take heed: lock your car at night

Editor: On the night of January 2, some thieves went through the two unlocked cars in our driveway (less than six feet from our doorway) and stole electronics, chargers, and most importantly, my wallet and checkbook which I had forgotten in the back seat.  Within two hours, they had used every credit card in the wallet multiple times down in San Pablo and Richmond and tried several times to access our bank account.

Seemingly they are thieves from out of town who were roaming our neighborhood (Sixth Street East and Charles Van Damme) for open cars.  Unlike on television, despite knowing when and where every transaction was being made (in real time) in stores equipped with surveillance cameras, the local police down there couldn’t seem to do anything to catch them.  The Sonoma police were very nice, but there doesn’t seem to be anything they can do either. Having lived all over the country, I still contend that Sonoma is one of the safest places in the U.S.  That said, I am writing to urge everyone to lock your house and car if you don’t already and to keep an eye out at night.  If you wake up in the middle of the night, glance out at the street as it is possible you woke up because you heard a noise.  I’m sad to be starting out the New Year feeling less safe but I’m still happy to be living in Sonoma. Happy New Year.
