Our View: You ____ tube

The Internet sensation? No … although we have some charming videos playing on SVTV Comcast 27.
A puzzle? Well, maybe …

You have a tube? You are a tube? Oh, you need a tube!
That’s right. Starting next week we’ll be delivering your copy of The Sun to a new tube on your mailbox post, or front fence or other convenient location. All you need to do is call us (933.0101), stop by to see us (158 W. Napa St.), or e-mail us (delivery@sonomasun.com), and let us know whether you want dark brown or the ever popular white. Then our delivery folks will install a tube and put your copy of Sonoma’s best-read newspaper there every Friday morning, convenient for you to retrieve, clean and dry.
The introductory fee for this service is $10 for six months, which works out to just 38¢ a week. Heck, you can’t even get a candy bar for that little, these days. Many of you generously responded to our similar request last year, and we do still believe that news should be free. We provide information that, if widely shared, helps build community and provide transparency in government. So you will still be able to pick up a copy of The Sun, with FineHome inside, at our office and at numerous boxes and drop points around the Valley. Free.

Cinco on Tres
Speaking of good things, we sure enjoyed the Cinco de Mayo celebration that La Luz put on at the Plaza last weekend. The rain kept away a lot of folks who might otherwise have turned out, but the feelings of warmth and community were not dampened.
Kudos to new executive director Stephen Dale and all the hard-working volunteers for a successful event.

Five on fire

Kudos, too, to our five school board trustees. We mentioned last week the important work they’re doing now, studying student achievement data for our district and others around the state. The trustees are asking tough questions and are not timid about speaking their minds. Good government is sometimes noisy, and the facts are always favorable, but we admire the strong motivation of all the trustees toward raising up the performance of all our students, including those with the additional task of learning a new language.
Examples abound of high-performing schools and districts, and in our view, the trustees need to keep those goals in sight with everything they do.
