Discussion of
homeless
Wednesday in
Glen Ellen

Sonoma Valley residents are invited to a public meeting to discuss the problem of homeless people and vagrants of Glen Ellen. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Glen Ellen Firehouse on Arnold Drive. Supervisor Valerie Brown, County Sheriff Bill Cogbill, and officers from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department substation will attend. The meeting is in response to concerns some Glen Ellen residents have that homeless people make them feel unsafe, and bring illegal behavior and drug and alcohol abuse to the community.

Caltrans cutting
eucalyptus trees
on Hwy. 12 near Glen Ellen

Crews hired by Caltrans, the state highway agency, will continue work this week to remove approximately 110 dead, diseased, and structurally unsound red gum eucalyptus trees from the Glen Ellen area of Highway 12 between Nun’s Canyon Road and Arnold Drive.
The work was to begin Monday. Caltrans officials say the weakened trees pose a potential safety concern for motorists and others in close proximity. Crews may implement full, intermittent lane closures to last no more than five minutes, and only as required. One-way traffic control will be in effect during portions of the job. Crews require roadway space and limited closures so that large trees and trees near power lines can safely be felled. Crews may be working during the following hours: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Sunday 6 a.m. to noon. These trees have been infested with lerp psyllid insect, a non-native insect that has ravaged this species of eucalyptus. Reliable Tree Experts is completing regional work in Sonoma, Solano, and Marin counties. The work follows the inspection of more than 6,000 trees in the highway right of way by certified and registered consulting arborists hired by Caltrans. An ornithologist will help to ensure that no active bird nests are disturbed.
