A 2.5-foot-tall stack of turquoise-blue spheres standing atop a 4-foot-high pedestal is planned for installation at the gateway arch to the Springs on Highway 12 near the McDonald’s restaurant.
That was one of the key design elements that ceramicist Oliverio Quezada shared on April 5 with the Sonoma Valley Redevelopment Advisory Committee. The county is paying Quezada $35,000 in redevelopment money to spiff up the arch.
Quezada outlined other plans that he has for the arch, including decorating a low-lying wall at the arch with tiles made by school children.
But commissioners wanted Quezada to come back to their next meeting with more detail.
“We’re going to pay you $35,000 for a piece of art and I don’t want to be surprised,” said committee member Lisa Murray.
Quezada said, “I hate to feel like I’m going to be censored, quite honestly,” but added, “Let me just reassure you that the last thing I want to do is make something controversial.”
