Dragons suffered first loss after valiant effort.
The Sonoma Dragons were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities and fell to the Healdsburg Greyhounds 15-0 Friday night at Arnold Field, in the league opener for both teams. The loss drops the Dragons record to 2-1-1 (0-1 in the Sonoma County League).
Despite dominating the time of possession, Sonoma fell victim to Healdsburg’s big-play offense and allowed two long touchdown passes in the second quarter. The Greyhounds added a late field goal for their final points.
Sonoma out-gained Healdsburg 367 yards to 257, and accumulated 24 first downs to the visitors five. The Dragons got a season high 180 yards from senior Matt Darnell on 33 carries, but were unable to find the end zone. A key stop by the Greyhounds on fourth-and-goal at the Healdsburg one yard-line early in the fourth quarter sealed the Dragons fate. Junior quarterback Jake Powers completed 19 passes, good for 185 yards.
The Sonoma Dragons next face the El Molino Lions, who lost their first league game to the Analy Tigers in Sebastopol, by a score of 34-0. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM.
