Sonoma Valley hosts a wealth of successful charity fundraisers each year. From big Plaza events to elaborate dinners and auctions, most are complex to produce, and in some cases, ticket prices are steep.
That’s why the Valley of the Moon Teen Center’s upcoming Super Bowl Tamale Fundraiser is so refreshing. No need to buy tickets, get dressed up, attend an event or bid on anything. All you need to do is eat and watch TV – and even the TV part is optional.
Here’s how it works: For $30, you get a dozen tasty, traditionally made meat or cheese tamales to serve on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 3) – or on any day, for that matter. Call Rebecca Hermosillo at 707.364.2686 to preorder your tamales now, and they’ll be available for pick up between Jan. 21 and 27 at either the Teen Center or La Luz. Or, if you’re chained to your desk, computer or TV remote, the folks at the Teen Center will even deliver your order during those dates, making this just about the easiest charity contribution ever. Volunteers will also be selling tamales at the Teen Center on Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Whether you decide to serve them while watching the Super Bowl, eat them right away, freeze them or share them with friends and co-workers, purchasing tamales is an easy and delicious way to help the Teen Center. Best of all, 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to support the organization.
Feeling a bit more ambitious? How about actually helping to assemble the tamales? By tradition, it’s a group effort – it’s said that tamales are made for special occasions, and an occasion is made out of making them. And with thousands of tamales to wrap, willing hands are more than welcome. Board members, teens, parents and volunteers have already signed on to the tamale-making team, and Teen Center executive director Celeste Winders invites others to join the party – the more, the merrier. “It’s always a wonderful time to talk, share and spend time together,” said Winders. “We love volunteers and it’s a great chance to get to know people. For us at the Teen Center, it seems like the perfect fundraiser since community is what we’re all about.” To volunteer, call Rebecca Hermosillo or e-mail her at rebecca.hermosillo@century21.com.
