At the meeting of the Sonoma Valley Unified School District trustees last week, Gateway School honored tenth grader Seth Sapp as Gateway School’s Student of the Year and Creekside High School honored Jack Swanson as its Student of the Year.
Teachers praised Seth Sapp as their “highest performing student,” a “great note-taker,” and someone who is always willing to help others. He “goes the extra mile to earn extra credit.” Throughout his school career, his teachers have praised him. At Prestwood Elementary, he was said to be enthusiastic and creative. At Riviera School in Kelseyville, he scored in the 99th percentile in problem solving on the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT). His third grade teacher remembers him as “a real pleasure,” and his fourth grade teacher called him, “very conscientious with his work.” By the time he reached Altimira, he consistently scored proficient in math on the Califonia Standards Test (CST). His teachers there described him as a pleasure to work with and praised his outstanding work habits. Seth lives in Sonoma with his mother, Melissa, sister Sarah, and brother Paul Huyck.
Jack Swanson, son of John and Eileen Swanson of Sonoma, entered Creekside High School in the spring of 2006 after two years at Sonoma Valley High School. After four semesters at Creekside, he has earned the necessary credits to graduate, and will receive his diploma this spring. During this time at Creekside, he has consistently been on the honor roll, and he nurtured an active extra-curricular life, including creating a comic strip for the Index Tribune, maintaining a part time job, and researching and developing an on-line comic strip which he maintains today. During his time at Creekside, Jack grew from a quiet and introverted teen into an assertive and confident young adult whose creative activities provide entertainment for all. In recognition of his academic excellence, leadership and creative presence, his teachers have named him Creekside High School’s Student of the Year.
