To the shock of most people involved at Sonoma Valley High School, Principal Micaela Philpot announced on Monday that she was resigning, effective June 30. She has been the principal at the high school less than one year, after serving one year as “interim” principal, following the surprise announcement, just before school started two years ago, by then-Principal Roberto Castro that he was leaving.
In a written statement, Philpot said, “The superintendent, with support from the Board, has decided she wants different leadership at the high school. Regardless of my thoughts or feelings about this decision, I respect the fact that this decision is hers to make.”
Philpot has been an educator in Sonoma Valley for over 30 years. She was a teacher for 19 years and then a principal for over 13 years, first at Dunbar Elementary School, then at Altimira Middle School, and now at Sonoma Valley High School.
Superintendent Barbara Young, who is retiring on June 30, has called a meeting of the high school staff for later this week, to discuss the “process and timelines for the search for next year’s high school principal.”
