Obituaries


Marion DeTrude passed away Feb. 21, 2008 at Sonoma Valley Hospital. Marion was born in Sweden and immigrated to America with her parents at the age of seven. She graduated with a B.A. from New York University and an M.A. from Columbia University. She worked as a consultant with the Girl Scouts of the USA in public relations, personnel and management.
Marion was a life member of Soroptimist International and a charter member and past president of the Sonoma Sunrise club. After retiring and moving to Sonoma, she started Sonoma Valley Greeting Service and Global Public Relations of Sonoma. She loved to travel, visiting other Soroptimists and friends around the world, with the highlight of her travels being her hot air balloon ride in Africa at the age of 88, and she produced many videos of the 70 countries she visited. She made friends worldwide and volunteered her time and energy locally and around the world.
She will be missed by family and friends, near and far, and leaves two children, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a niece. Her zest for life was contagious and will long be remembered. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Girl Scouts of the USA and/or Soroptimist International of Sonoma Valley, P. O. 949, Sonoma. There will be a tribute to Marion’s Life on Sunday, March 16 at the Seven Flags Clubhouse from 3 to 5 p.m. Reservations required. Please call 707.996.4538.


Harry Charles Bell, 91, of Sonoma, died March 4, 2008, at home in Sonoma. Harry was the loving husband of the late Joyce Dean Bell and the loving father of Harold, Rick, Karen, Lorie, Kathie, Sandra, Linda, Gayla, Sharon, Jim, Kevin and the late Randy. He was the adored grandfather of 21, great-grandfather of 22 and great-great-grandfather of one.
His most cherished accomplishment in life was his family. A native of San Francisco, he retired as a sergeant from the San Francisco Police Department, after serving 31 years. He was past president of the Police Officer’s Association. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Church and a five-year resident of Sonoma. Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 West Napa St., Sonoma. Interment was at Valley Cemetery, Sonoma.


Elberto E. Velez Viana, 69, of Sonoma, died in Sonoma on March 8, 2008. He was born on Sept. 3, 1938 in Ibague, Colombia, South America. Elberto was the eldest son of seven siblings. A loving father to son Edgar Velez, daughter Maritza Velez Lizarraga, son Jeffrey Velez; daughter-in-law Jeanine Velez and son-in-law Mark Lizarraga; grandfather to Sophie and Marco-Antonio Lizarraga. Elberto was a health enthusiast who loved good food, music and dancing.
Friends are invited to a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2008 at St. Francis Solano Catholic Church, West Napa Street and Third Street West, Sonoma. Arrangements under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma. Private inurnment at Jardines Del Recuerdo Cemetery, Santa Fe De Bogota, South America.
