KSVY 91.3, the radio station that brings Sonoma to the world, celebrates spring with a new slate of shows joining the station’s current stellar lineup. The non-profit community radio station is managed by Three House MultiMedia, which also manages cable channel SVTV 27 and publishes the Sonoma Valley Sun.
Launched in March of 2004 as a community-building enterprise to foster cross-cultural appreciation and mutual respect among the neighboring cultures in Sonoma Valley, KSVY is proud to mark its fourth anniversary as the only local radio station serving this region. Founder Bill Hammett began the process in 1995. “My wife and I,” he said, “wanted to provide a new outlet for the community, to help pull people together around music, high school sports and local government. We didn’t realize it’d be a 9-year process to launch it, but we love how the community has adopted KSVY as its own.”
Beginning Monday, March 17, at 8 a.m., KSVY takes its morning radio programming to a new dimension – television. “Mornings in Sonoma” with city councilman/mayor pro tem Ken Brown will give fans a chance to a peek into the inner sanctum of the KSVY control room, as the show starts its simulcast on sister TV station Channel 27 (SVTV). According to Three House MultiMedia president Stephanie Dunn, “As a multimedia company, deciding to broadcast ‘Mornings in Sonoma’ on SVTV Channel 27 was a natural step for the organization. It offers us the opportunity provide vital information, relevant to our community, in a format unique to our news organization. Television broadcast of the morning show and its guests broadens our ability to reach the Sonoma Valley. The opportunities are endless.”
Never predictable, but predictably entertaining, often surprising and always engaging, KSVY and its roster of more than 60 volunteer show hosts fill the airwaves with topical programming and news you won’t hear anywhere else.
“Our line-up of shows on KSVY is driven by community interest,” said Bob Taylor, the KSVY programming director. “We feature programs both in English and in Spanish that provide news, information, and entertainment, and people in town are always bringing forward new ideas and new proposals.”
“KSVY truly has something for everyone,” said Daedalus Howell, who is a radio co-host as well as editor of FineLife magazine and director at FilmArt 3, two more of Three House MultiMedia’s endeavors. “Each show represents a niche audience, whether it’s music, comedy, news or issues that touch people’s lives, and reaches the public in a very direct way.”

Global issues, local solutions
Subjects of national importance are given a local dimension on KSVY by specialists in their field: Host of the new “Taxpertise” show Bonnie Lee offers some sobering facts. “Tax time is not just once every April – the government is now claiming five months of every working person’s pay. Sonoma’s many self-employed and small business owners are at special risk for making common fiscal mistakes that can cost a pretty penny come April 15.”

Que Bueno
KSVY’s hugely popular Spanish language programs, “Mananas en Espanol” and “La Corneta,” occupy the time slot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a mix of community news and the best in Latin music. On Monday late night, new hosts Mario and Angel join “Super Sonicos” at 10 p.m. and DJ Clandestino spins on “Noches Latinas” at midnight.

History, Health, Pets…Taxes?
The mid-day lineup from 1 to 3 p.m. addresses topics relating to life and lifestyle issues with experts such as acupuncturist and Oriental medicine specialist Dr. Ned Hoke, veterinarian Dr. Rhonda Stallings and historian Gerald Hill. “Taxpertise,” a new show with tax specialist Bonnie Lee, guides listeners through the complexities of financial survival Thursdays at 2 p.m.
One show, multiple personalities
Occupying the 3 p.m. time slot are a cast of characters created by the inimitable Jeff Gilbert, who presides over this eccentric salon known as “Jeff’s Joynt.” In-between tunes by the great song artists from the 1940s and mixing up cocktails – shaken, not stirred – Gilbert and his “guests” keep up a wacky patter.

Celebrating Sonoma’s Abundance
The heavyweights in food and wine, Sun Epicurean columnist Kathleen Hill; sustainable produce guru Mark Mulcahy; executive director of the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance Grant Raeside; sommelier wine writer and TV host Christopher Sawyer; and wine educator, sommelier and songwriter John Burdick cover the industries that put this region on the map, and kick it up a notch with insider insights and interviews weekdays at 4 p.m. Mulcahy, along with new co-host Mary Ann Carr, can answer your questions about Sonoma’s seasonal bounty and provide tips on how to grow it, buy it and prepare it.

Guys@Five
The tempo picks up 5 p.m. each weekday when the “Guys at Five” pull out all the stops. Forget segues – this is a mash-up that includes Smokin’ Joe Herrschaft on Monday, Bob Starr and Medicine Man on Tuesday, Michael Coats, Mr. Pickles and Jobsite Jeff handle “hump day,” and roaring into the pit are Bradley Gray and Donn Dabney, two car guys who plan to go full throttle on their new Thursday night show. On Friday, host Steve Hammersly gets you in the mood for the weekend.

It’s the weekend
The wonderfully eclectic mix of weekend shows on KSVY reflects the varied interests people like to pursue in their two “free” days. Whether exploring the spiritual, enjoying a well-told story, hearing history recreated or getting up to speed on new technology, there are shows that nurture the inner person. “Moon River” with host Ward Glen introduces us to poetry, and Lisa Summers’ “B-Side Kids” is sure to resonate with families.

Coming soon …
Look for more programs coming soon, including: “Realty Talk,” hosted by Sonoma real estate broker Norm Brown, provides practical information on all aspects of the real estate market. “We give listeners resources they can use in their decision-making. Each show focuses on a general topic of interest to Sonoma residents that could range from investment to financing or home improvement,” said Brown. The public is encouraged to call in with their questions or comments. “Relationships” with Dr. Jeffrey Low will focus on the challenges and successes in relationships and take listener calls and questions. “Lighthouse,” in which Ernest H. Vogt, an authority on unexplained wonders, will delve into the mysteries of the paranormal.
