William George Nabhan died April 15, 2008 in Sonoma. William was the husband of the late Helen Nabhan and the father of Diane Shaw of Sonoma and Wadie Kolsch of Alamo. He was the grandfather of Cherie and John Forte and was the great-grandfather of Jonathan Graham, Jason Clayson, Jordan, Shauntel, Dominique, Cameron and Dylan Forte.
William was a real estate broker for 40 years on the peninsula, and a former member of The Masonic Lodge and The Kiwanis Club of Redwood City. He was an avid tennis player. William was a 10-year resident of Sonoma, a former resident of Redwood City and a native of Oakland, California.
No formal services will be held. Private inurnment will be held at Valley Cemetery, Sonoma, by Mission Cremation Service under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2065 W. El Camino Real, Suite C, Mountain View, CA 94040, are preferred by the family.
Irene Marie Virzi, 88, of Sonoma, died peacefully April 13, 2008 at home in Sonoma. Born to Simone and Julia Vallarino in San Francisco, she lived all her childhood in Sausalito. After her marriage to Donald Virzi they lived in Corte Madera, then moved to Sonoma in 1963. Irene was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening and raised canary birds for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her son Frank, and a sister, Yolanda Burlison. She is survived by her son Ronald Virzi (Jeannine) of Sonoma; her grandchildren Jeff Virzi (Racheal) and Carrie Smith (Briant); her great grandchildren Tom Lucas, Maiah Lucas and Grace Virzi. A special appreciation to her caregivers: Tokasa, Hospice by the Bay, and the Reverend Michael Kelly. At her request no formal services will be held. Private inurnment by Mission Cremation Service under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma.
Marie Elynor Gomez-Adams passed away on the morning of April 9, 2008 at Bannar Lassen Hospital in Susanville, Calif., with her two surviving children, Jack and Bob Gomez, at her side. Marie was born in Fairfield, on May 5, 1919 to John and Josephine (Gerevas) Freitas. The Freitas and Gerevas families originated from the Azores Islands in Portugal.
Marie was the fifth of eight children. She was closest to her sister Dorothy and brother Bud. As a young girl she worked in her father’s slaughterhouse and meat market, as well as on the sheep and cattle ranch. A very athletic girl in high school, she was the head cheerleader. In 1936 she was crowned Miss Solano County at the Salinas Rodeo. Until her final years she was an avid and accomplished golfer.
Marie and Stan Gomez married on March 8, 1937 in Reno, Nev. (Stan was one of ten children.) Their first child, Rose Marie, was born when they worked on the Hillburn Ranch between Napa and Fairfield. Jack was the second child, born in Knoxville, Calif. in 1939. Then Leonard, born at the Gordon Valley Ranch in 1952. The fourth child Bob was born in 1957 in Sonoma.
Marie retired from the Sonoma State Hospital when she was 62. Stan passed away in Sonoma in 1978. In June of 1983 Marie and John Adams married. They lived in Sonoma until John’s death in 1997. Marie’s sons Jack and Bob came to help care for their mother in Susanville.
Marie’s family agrees that this great lady was the toughest and sharpest you could be blessed to have met.
She is survived by her two sons Jack and Bob; by her three sisters, Dorothy Gojkovich, Barbara Otto and Ina Clare Escano; and ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Rose Marie and Leonard passed away a number of years ago.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 16 at 11:30at Duggan’s Mission Chapel. Interment at Valley Cemetery. Funeral service under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma.
Billie Faye Hingst (nee. Finley), 82, passed away peacefully on April 14 in Paradise. Friends and family are sorry for her passing, but glad that she is no longer in pain. She was born on January 7, 1926 in Chickasha, Okla. to Leonard and Cassie Finley. She was a Psychiatric Technician for 32 years at the Sonoma Developmental Center, a Sonoma resident for 52 years and a resident of Paradise for the last four years. She loved to play bingo and frequent the casinos. Billie loved gardening, especially taking care of Teddy’s roses, and also spending time with her three Chihuahuas, “Mini,” Mighty,” and “Dinky.”
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Teddy Hingst, her son Teddy C. Hingst and her granddaughter Daphne McDonald Parson.
She is survived by her children: Ella Francis Markel, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Theresa Susan McDonald, of Almanor, Madelyn Kay Grim, of Queen Creek, Ariz., Brenda Ann McGinty, of Grass Valley, James Warren Hingst, of Paradise, Denice Janna Warbelton, of Muskego, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; six siblings: Lura Morris, of Sacramento, Gladys Collins, of Wasilla, Alaska, Phyllis Mattlock Echols, of Bowie, Texas, Glenda Lee Whitener, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Leonard Henry Finley, Jr., of Roswell, N.M., and James Rayman Finley, of Duncan, Okla.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside inurnment today, April 25, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Valley Cemetery, 425 East MacArthur Street, Sonoma, with Reverend Peadar Dalton conducting the service.
