With the Charles Schwab Cup Championship only two weeks away, the top 30 money winners on the PGA Champions Tour will be heading to Sonoma Golf Club to play for the biggest championship of the year.
The Sun will be profiling all 30 players who will be a part of the “fifth major” on the Champions Tour calendar as we prepare for the start of the tournament on Oct. 30. Here is a look at eight players who will be part of the field:
Jay Haas – Haas has been one of the most successful golfers on both the PGA and Champions Tours, and this year, he won the Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg, Md. Haas won the Charles Schwab Cup in 2006.
Bernhard Langer – Langer and Haas dueled at the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach earlier this year, with Langer winning on the seventh playoff hole. Langer also won the Ginn Championship Hammock Beach Resort this year and is primed to win the first Cup of his career.
Fred Funk – Splitting time between the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour, Funk has done well in his brief time playing on the senior circuit this year. He has won two tournaments and has two second-place finishes, after playing in only 15 tournaments so far.
Eduardo Romero – Romero has been on fire this year – winning three tournaments, including the U.S. Senior Open. His scoring average is under 70 for the second consecutive year and he is looking to cap off a career year with a Cup Championship victory.
Jeff Sluman – In his first full season on the Champions Tour, Sluman’s consistent play has paid off with two wins, a second and two thirds in 23 tournaments this year. He, like Romero, is hoping to cap off a career year with a Cup Championship.
Loren Roberts – Roberts is no stranger to the Charles Schwab Cup, as he is this year’s defending champion. He has one win on tour this year at the Commerce Bank Championship, along with three second-place finishes. He has finished in the top 10 in half of the tournaments he has in competed in.
John Cook – In his first full season, Cook has yet to win a tournament, but has a second-place finish at the Senior British Open and 14 top-10 finishes in only 23 events. Cook won the AT&T Championship last year, only his second tournament as part of the Champions Tour, and will look to make a similar impact at Sonoma Golf Club in two weeks.
Scott Hoch – Hoch has two victories on tour this year, including a win at the ACE Group Classic in February in a four-player playoff. He also has two second-place finishes this year. With his balanced play, he’ll be a threat to win the Cup for the first time in his career.
