Sanford Smith leaves VOM Water District board

Sanford K. Smith has announced his resignation, effective Sept. 30, from the board of the Valley of the Moon Water District, citing health as the reason.
In his letter of resignation, Smith said that while he has been ill for a number of years, he had found it possible to perform his duties. Now, he said, “rather than attempt to serve out my term in a less than adequate manner, I wish to give you the opportunity to select a director who will be able to serve the District in a full and competent manner.”  He said he greatly enjoyed having served the District and “it has been a real pleasure to serve with a General Manager, employees and fellow board members who have demonstrated such devotion to serving the needs of our District and the public.” He said he has hopes that the board will continue to “maintain the standards we have set for the District.” General Manager Krishna Kumar expressed appreciation for Smith’s years of service. “He was a great board member, leading and guiding us through several important projects. He was a natural consensus builder. I personally will dearly miss him.”  Kumar said the board is planning to appoint a replacement and will be reviewing applications through Oct. 24. Requirements are that applicants must be registered voters, and reside within the service areas of the district – extending from Glen Ellen all the way down to Temelec. Kumar said anyone interested can get an application from the 139 Bay Street, and the board is planning to interview candidates on Nov 4.

Alcalde nominations sought

Civic spirit, behind-the-scenes volunteerism and leadership – those are the qualities the City of Sonoma is asking the public’s help in recognizing for the 2009 Alcalde.
Each December since 1975, the City Council has selected a citizen of the year who is given the title of Honorary Alcalde.
(the Spanish word for “Mayor”).
Nominees should embody a broad spectrum of voluntary community service to Sonoma Valley, serve in a leadership role in at least one non-profit organization and not seek public accolades or recognition for work done.
Nominations will be accepted until Nov 26, and may be submitted to City Manager Linda Kelly, No. 1, The Plaza, Sonoma CA 95476.  For more information, call City Clerk Gay Rainsbarger at 707.933.2216.
