It was touted as a Sonoma County League showdown that had big time league title implications. Casa Grande would be amped up on their homecoming to try and take down the Dragons and Sonoma would try to take down the Gauchos for the second year in a row.
For Sonoma, it just wasn’t what they expected at all.
The Gauchos used the big play early and often to put Sonoma down early, and then used their potent defense to put them away, as they cruised to a 35-0 win.
Sonoma (2-5, 2-2 SCL) had their best chance early in the contest with a well-run trick play: a reverse pass that saw senior wide receiver Steve Filippi take a handoff from senior running back Nick Fedrick. Casa Grande bit on Fedrick’s run to the right side, but when Filippi took the reverse, he ended up hoisting a pass deep downfield to senior tight end Jesse Bojarsky, who was behind the defense entirely, but Bojarsky dropped the pass. Sonoma ended up punting on that drive.
When Casa Grande got the ball back, senior quarterback Matt O’Brien found senior wide receiver Matt Gallo for a 58 yard touchdown pass two plays into their drive to put the first points of the game on the board and senior kicker Connor Derby booted home the extra point for a 7-0 Gaucho lead.
After Casa’s defense stopped Sonoma again, O’Brien found Gallo once more after scrambling out of the pocket, and Gallo broke two tackles and ran away for another score, this time from 68 yards away, to give Casa a 14-0 lead.
From there, Sonoma really had no answer offensively. The running game with Nick Fedrick was somewhat successful, as he finished with 110 yards on 23 carries, but Casa stopped any notion the Dragons had of a passing game. Sonoma would feel pressure from the Casa defense all night, and the defensive front for the Gauchos sacked Jake Powers four times and forced him to throw two interceptions.
After forcing another punt, the Gauchos ran a time consuming drive in the second quarter that ended with a 4 yard touchdown run from senior running back Kahlil Keys, giving Casa 21-0 lead going into halftime.
Gallo and O’Brien would hook up one last time from 19 yards out to complete their mastery on the evening, a night where highly touted senior wideout Matt Nadolski was held to only three catches and 23 yards.
O’Brien ended up 8-of-14 for 219 and the three scores to Gallo, who had four catches for 146 yards.
Sonoma has two more league games remaining, and their next game will be at home against the Petaluma Trojans this Friday, October 31. The Halloween showdown will start at 7:30 p.m. with KSVY and SVTV’s live coverage starting at 7:15.
A replay of Friday’s contest against Casa can be seen on SVTV 27 tonight at 7 p.m.
