All it takes is one thing to turn your season around. For Sonoma, it might have been Mike Mulas’ sack to beat Petaluma on Halloween night. With that fresh in their minds, it was up to the Dragons to make good on their fantastic finish to that contest with a good game the next week.
Suffice to say, the Tigers had to have been impressed with what they saw from Sonoma.
Riding the momentum of that game-winning play into the final league game of the season, Sonoma destroyed Analy from beginning to end with little room to argue just how good this team could be. The Dragons won, 34-14 in a game which the Tigers needed nearly two quarters to stop their streak of three-and-outs.
The Dragons (4-5, 4-2 SCL) finished off their season in the Sonoma County League thanks to a brilliant performance from senior running back Nick Fedrick, who ran for 205 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns, both from three yards out. Fedrick eclipsed the 1,000-yard plateau in the contest and added to his SCL leading touchdown total, as he now has 15 scores on the year.
Senior quarterback Jake Powers was very efficient, going 9-for-11 for 100 yards and a touchdown to senior wide receiver Steve Filippi, who scored on the pass play from six yards out.
Analy quarterback David Glass just couldn’t get things done on Friday night, as he was pressured early and often. When he finally did get a couple of receptions strung together, his team was down 20-0, although a touchdown to senior wide receiver Jack Doran with less than a second to go in the first half helped cut the lead down to 20-6.
Sonoma scored twice in the third quarter through somewhat unconventional means. A fullback dive play to Mulas on a third down play turned into a 20-yard touchdown run, and then after forcing a Tiger punt, senior fullback Bradley Ramirez scored from one yard out on a dive play. It was a night where the Dragons spread the wealth around, as four players scored touchdowns on the evening.
The Dragons can gain eligibility for the North Coast Section Division II playoffs with a win against San Marin on Friday, Nov. 14 at Arnold Field, where Sonoma will honor its senior class for Senior Night. NCS rules state that a team with an overall record of .500 or above or a .500 record or better against teams within its division can apply for the playoffs.
Twelve teams will make the playoffs after offseason rule changes saw the NCS adapt divisions similar to those of the California Interscholastic Federations’s division system. This year, teams from the five state divisions will vie for a state football title in Carson, Calif. in December.
The Dragons win over Analy can be seen on SVTV 27 at 7 p.m. on both Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9. The game with San Marin will be simulcast on both SVTV and KSVY on Nov. 14 starting at 7:15 p.m.
