Marie Patricia (Murnane) Carroll, 89, died peacefully at her home in Sonoma, with her family at her side, on Dec. 3, 2008. Marie’s father and maternal grandparents were born in Ireland and came to San Francisco around the turn of the century. Her father ran a mercantile and saloon in San Francisco and also served as a deputy sheriff. Marie was born on April 23, 1919 in San Francisco. Marie graduated Presentation High School in 1937. She lived in Virginia, Texas and Louisiana during World War II and the Korean War while Leo was stationed in these locations serving in the Army Air Corps. After the war, she lived in Potrero Hill until 1981, when her husband Leo E. Carroll retired from the Southern Pacific Corporation and they moved to Sonoma. While in Sonoma, Marie enjoyed volunteering at the Church Mouse.
She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Carroll (Robert Downs), Joan (Michael) Lyons, and Barbara Bradley, as well as five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Friends attended a visitation and vigil service on Monday, Dec. 8. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at St. Francis Solano Catholic Church. Interment will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Mission Road, Colma, CA 94014.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice by the Bay, 190 W. Napa St., Sonoma, CA 95476. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, Sonoma.
John Edward Peetz, beloved husband and father, passed away Dec. 4, 2008. John was born in McMinnville, Oregon on July 29, 1926 and attended University High School in Oakland, Calif. He proudly served as a Marine Sergeant during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, he completed his Bachelors of Business Administration in 2 years from Armstrong College in Berkeley.
John’s career began with the City of Oakland. In 1965 he became the Director of Parks. In 1972 he was named Director of the Oakland Museum of California where he remained until he retired in 1984.
He actively supported the community through Kiwanis, Lake Merritt Breakfast Club, Rotary, the American Museum Association, and was a former board member of The Metropolitan Oakland YMCA.
After retirement he moved from Piedmont to Alameda, eventually settling in Sonoma where he is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Elizabeth Peetz. He is also survived by his children, Mark Peetz, Blair Peetz and Paige Lofgren as well as his stepchildren, Carolyn Kenney-Aebi and John Kenney and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church of Petaluma, 40 Fifth St. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Salvation Army.
