On Saturday, Jan. 17, nine teams with 41 young birders joined by experienced leaders hiked 6.75 miles in 16 hours through the habitats of Sonoma, from Fryer and Nathanson Creeks, Sonoma Plaza and General Vallejo fields to Bartholomew Park, the Sonoma Garden Park, Depot Park and lower Sonoma Mountain. The second annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for Kids recorded a total of 53 species and 1,385 birds, with Fryer Creek and Sonoma Garden Park taking the lead with 283 and 324 birds, respectively, and both with 32 total species. A tabulation celebration at the Community Center followed and featured team presentations and live birds from Sonoma Bird Rescue.
