Winter is the ideal season for working with California native plants. The Sonoma Ecology Center has scheduled two nursery workdays to help the organization raise native plants for local restoration, and to share knowledge about how to propagate and take care of these important plants local residents.
According to Joel Grogan, SEC restoration specialist and nursery manager, “This is a great way to introduce your family to the exciting world of horticulture. Our workdays allow people to learn first hand about techniques to propagate local native plants and to gain an appreciation of native habitat restoration. These are important skills for anyone who cares about Sonoma Valley’s future as we adapt to more intense land use and climate change.”
There will be two workdays. At the first, on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will learn about native plant nursery functions as they assist with maintenance. On Saturday, March 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., volunteers will help sow seeds and plant native trees.
Volunteers should wear comfortable, waterproof shoes, layered clothing that can get dirty and bring drinking water and work gloves. Space is limited and an RSVP is required. To reserve a space, contact Joel Grogan at 707.996.0712, ext. 113 or joel@sonomaecologycenter.org.
SEC’s native plant nursery is located at the Sonoma Garden Park, 19990 7th St. East in Sonoma. For more information about the SEC, call 707-996-0712 or visit www.sonomaecologycenter.org.
