Last year, George McKale was appointed by the Sonoma City Council as the first City Historian for the City of Sonoma. This week, McKale joins the Sonoma Valley Sun team as a recurring columnist. McKale’s new column “Turning Stones” for the Sun will, according to McKale, “promote education relating to the pre-history and history of the Sonoma Valley.”
McKale is a 12-year resident of Sonoma and has an environmental consulting firm based in Sonoma. He conducts prehistoric and historical cultural resources studies throughout California, including archaeological excavation, historical research, and preparation of Environmental Impact Reports. As City Historian, he identifies and maintains historical records and artifacts, assists in organizing preservation activities, and is a resource for schools and visitors regarding the history of the City of Sonoma.
“It’s like a public relations position,” McKale explained. “People e-mail and call about issues facing the city. I’m also asked to be a consultant on a number of committees and to help developers with their issues.” It’s a lot to ask of someone in a volunteer position but McKale enjoys the responsibility. “It’s entertaining and fun. We’re currently working on a plaque program to put on historical buildings around the city; it’s a great way to promote education and history.”
McKale is excited about his new writing assignment for The Sun but a little nervous about the transition to newspaper writing. “I’ve written hundreds of technical papers over the years,” he said. “This will be a new challenge.” According to McKale, “My work is my passion and I would like to share my passion by serving and contributing to the character of the City of Sonoma.”
