Marjorie P. Covell Marjorie P. Covell left this earthly realm peacefully on April 13, 2009. Marj was born “on a kitchen table on 103th Street in New York City” on March 20, 1911 to spectacular dancer Marie Breithbarth Pace and attorney Francis P. Pace. She recently celebrated her 98th birthday with her two daughters at her favorite restaurant, Cal-Italia at Gramma’s Pizza. Marj raised her family in Pelham Manor, N.Y., and then moved to Mystic, Conn. and Port St. Lucie, Fla. before moving to Sonoma ten years ago. She grew to love her new home and made many friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Donald B. Waugh many years ago and had a wonderful second marriage to George D. Covell until his death in 1980. Survivors include her three children, Donna Waugh Campbell of Sonoma, Douglas B. Waugh and his wife Chloe French, of Bellingham, Wash. and Karen Waugh Maloney of Stonington, Conn., grandchildren Mikayla and Tayo Waugh, Jannine Salo and great-grandson Taylor Salo and her sister-in-law Doris Hansen and nephew Scott Pace and his wife Trish of Sonoma, who have been so kind to Marj while in Sonoma. She also leaves a very special friend, Fred Jensen of League City, Texas.
Marj was an inspiration to all who knew her. She walked a mile each day until a few months before her death and loved to ride her “horse” each afternoon. She lent her ear and open heart to all who knew her and shared her positive practical philosophy. She epitomized the philosophy expressed in one of her favorite books, “Gift from the Sea,” and she lived each segment of her life with acceptance, grace and dignity. In her 80s, she took a class on how to become a clown and created her own costume and character called Gram Cracker, a name given her by one of her grandchildren. She shared her wonderful enthusiasm for life and had a great sense of humor. In her 90s, she took up painting and yoga and continued to inspire all those who knew her with her wit, wisdom and insatiable curiosity.
She has assured her family and friends that she will continue to be accessible to all those who believe that all things are possible as she continues her journey.
At her request, no services will be held.  She expressed a wish that any donations in her memory be made to Hospice of the Bay at 190 W. Napa St., Sonoma 95476 for their caring compassionate service in her final days.
