Prestwood’s fifth grade class creates huge mosaic mural

The fifth-grade class at Prestwood School recently completed work on an enormous, three-panel mosaic mural entitled, “A Jungle of Faces.” The mosaic, a gift to the school, is displayed permanently on an outdoor wall.

The mosaic was inspired by the artwork of French artist Henri Rousseau. All 84 fifth grade students worked on the project, which began with a self-portrait sketched in pencil. The students then replicated themselves in the mural using bits of ceramic tile to create the mosaic. The mural also included animals, snakes, flowers, and a giant three-color sun.

Community donations and helping hands for the project came from Mike and Mary Szykowny of Sonoma Tile Works, Janey Mulas, and the Prestwood custodial and office staff. In all, more than 20 Prestwood parents helped on the project, led by art-lover and parent Megan Segre, who dedicated countless hours toward the completion of the mosaic.
