Valley of the Moon Garden Club takes first place in July 4 parade

For the first time since its inception 58 years ago, the Valley of the Moon Garden Club has taken first place in the annual Fourth of July parade contest. The club members worked for days preparing and decorating their float – a 1931 pickup truck owned by member Charline Hunter and adorned with fresh flowers, greenery, raffia, ribbons and more.
One of the club’s oldest members, Rosemarie Indelicato, 94, rode in the truck, waving to the crowds and wishing all a happy Fourth. Indelicato still gardens her enormous piece of property at Broadway and France streets and received huge amounts of applause from the appreciative crowd of parade onlookers.
Garden club member Doreen Proctor said she’d never had so much fun on the Fourth of July.
“We had a great group of more than 20 people working on the float and making lavender spray hand-outs with special labels made by one of the husbands,” said Proctor. “And we didn’t lack for food, either, as everyone brought delicious homemade treats to sustain us while we worked.”
Completing the Club’s procession were a push mower, a dog, wheelbarrows, wagons and members handing out poppy seed packets and the aforementioned lavender sprays.
“We had more fun than a barrel full of monkeys working on this project, such enthusiasm and hard work that all paid off,” said Proctor. “The excitement at winning first place is just so fantastic.”
