The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is one of only nine California museums to receive a grant of $50,000 from the National Endowment of the Arts. The grant, funded by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, is earmarked to preserve non-profit jobs threatened by decline in philanthropic support due to the economic downturn.
With education at the core of its mission, the funding will directly support the museum’s education staff who create and manage programs including the Art Rewards the Student Program (A.R.T.S.), art history courses for adults, docent programs, lecture series and free family days.
“This is an offering not just to the museum, but to the entire community it serves,” said Kate Eilertsen, the museum’s executive director. “We’ll be able to reach more children and families. In these troubled times, as programs are cut from schools and community organizations, we are committed to providing a place where people will gather to promote and inspire creativity.”
Nationally, 631 organizations received grants. “Receiving this grant puts us in the company of major institutions like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Asian Art Museum,” said Board President Jane Milotich. “It’s a testament to the high professional standards and creativity of the staff and of the museum’s commitment to quality educational programming.”
With more than 1,000 members, the SVMA is the largest visual arts organization in the San Francisco North Bay region. It is located at 551 Broadway and open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
