Last weekend local children and their families turned out at Depot Park for an iWalk event aimed at promoting health for children in our community. The event was hosted by Dr. Jerome Smith, medical director at the Sonoma Valley Community Health Center.
“iWalk is a countywide initiative,” said Dr. Smith, “and each non-profit in Sonoma is contributing to the success of the program by organizing events and motivating people to be healthy by walking.”
For the event, the center sent invitations to a “Bring Your Parent to Walk Day” to many of its pediatric patients. About 16 children – clad in their best walking shoes – gathered with their families on a crisp morning, ready to traverse the two-mile safe route planned by organizers. The 45-minute walk began and ended at Depot Park and was followed by light refreshments and a raffle for participants. Organizers were pleased with the turnout.
There are a number of other iWalk groups in the Valley, one at the Vintage Senior Center and another at Sonoma Valley Hospital. For more information, visit iwalksonoma.org.
