Henry (Hank) W. Parker, Sr.
Henry (Hank) W. Parker, Sr.

Henry (Hank) W. Parker, Sr. died Aug. 10, 2009 in Greenbrae after a brief illness. He was 76 years old. Hank was born Jan. 3, 1933 in New Rochelle, New York, the son of Emerson Fitch Parker and Marion MacNeill Parker. His beloved wife Mary L. Flett, of Sonoma, survives him.
He was preceded in death by his son, James Emerson Parker, and his first wife, Judith Robinson Parker. He was a proud father and grandfather and is survived by his four children from his marriage to Judith: Henry W. Parker, Jr. of Los Angeles, Joanna Witt of San Diego, Sally (Jim) Shaw of Salem, Ore., and Marjorie Doran of Sonoma and his six grandchildren: Alan Witt, Marc Witt, Amanda Shaw, Sarah Doran, Conor Doran and William Doran.
He spent his early years in Westport, Conn. where he graduated from Staples High School. He was an Eagle Scout and maintained an interest in scouting all his life. Hank left Westport to attend the University of Arizona in 1952, where he was a nationally ranked AAU swimmer and coach of the U of A swimming team. He graduated from the U of A in 1956 with a Bachelor in Science in Physical Education. His love of swimming led first to a career with the YMCA and later to a career with the American Red Cross. While his career with the Red Cross allowed him to indulge in his love of travel and move his family all over the country, mostly it allowed him to share his passion for teaching with everyone he touched. He was a lifelong teacher.
Hank and his wife Mary moved to Sonoma 16 years ago. Many who frequent the Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Fridays will fondly remember him as the “Egg Man.” He was involved with the board of the Temelec Country Club, where he served as president. As a member of the Napa Valley Genealogical Society, Hank was actively engaged in genealogical research, tracing his family roots back to England. He was also an avid coin and stamp collector and a die-hard 49ers fan, passions he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Hank had an incredible heart and soul. He touched everyone he met with his unconditional acceptance of others. He was a humble man, a man of silent, unwavering strength, a man who loved deeply and was deeply loved by his wife, his children, grandchildren, his friends and everyone he came in contact with.
A celebration of his life was held on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at Temelec Hall. Donations may be made in his name to the local chapter of the American Red Cross, 1790 Third Street # A, Napa, CA 94559-2804; or to the American National Red Cross, 2025 E Street, NW Washington, DC 20006. Arrangements cared for by Duggan’s Mission Chapel.
