Warm greetings for another mother

Women in nursing homes who would otherwise have a lonely Mother’s Day will receive fresh flowers and a handmade greeting, courtesy of the Ombudsman Program of Sonoma County and Woodland Star School.

Volunteers from the Mother’s Day Project will brighten the day of 50 to 60 women in Sonoma facilities. Over sixty percent of women in nursing homes never get visitors, said coordinator Alice Trayle. “The joy of the visit and the bouquet is wonderful, and a bit heartbreaking. They can’t believe something has come for them.”

Adding more warmth to the greeting this year is a hand-made greeting by first, third and fifth graders at Woodland Star. The youngsters created a card for their own mom, and another for an imaginary grandmother.

“They said she’s sad,” said one first-grader. “So I want my card to be pretty.”
