Grad Night set to rock ‘n’ roll

For years, grad night has provided just-graduated seniors with a safe, sober environment in which to celebrate. On what is traditionally one of the biggest party nights of the year, teens doff their caps and gowns, kiss mom and dad goodnight and head back to the high school where the campus becomes the scene of an all-night party.

In the days leading up to the celebration, legions of volunteers transform the school grounds into an unrecognizable wonderland filled with lights and scenes from exotic locales. In years’ past, celebrants have been greeted by movie paparazzi, buccaneers, old-west cowpokes and many other imaginative themes.

“Grad night is about giving the kids one last opportunity to make memories together,” said Publicity Chair Denise Fowler-Horsfall. “There are games, inflatable’s, tattoos and bouncy toys. There are chair massages and haircuts and manicures. The casino is an extremely popular place to hang out. A photo wall shows their high school years outside of the classroom. One of the highlights of the night is the hypnotist show. There is enough food to feed this small army but there are no drugs and no alcohol. The point of the night is to have a great time and be safe.”

The celebration party also includes raffle prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Sonoma Chevrolet continues its tradition of donating a car to be raffled off at the end of the night for one lucky graduate.

Ticket sales for grad night have been slow and organizers are hoping to boost sales to ensure a fun night for all participants. Forms and payment can be handled at Maggie Cunningham’s Student Activities Office.

Prize donations and gift certificates are still being sought; contact Gail Petersen at gailpetersen@comcast.net for donation information.

Additionally, volunteers are being sought to carry on event-planning jobs for future grad night celebrations. Contact Alice Schimm at 93.-0904 or amscollector@sbcglobal.net for further information. For general information, contact Denise Fowler-Horsfall at denisefh@comcast.net.

The Sonoma Valley High School Class of 2010 is about to be set loose upon the world. Their last hurrah as a class will be a night created by a large group of parents and community members who are happy to provide a safe space for the celebration.
