A 'profound friendship'

The Consul General of Mexico in San Francisco, Carlos Felix, presented Sonoma Mayor Steve Barbose with symbols of friendship today during a visit to Sonoma’s City Hall.

Councilmember Laurie Gallian also participated in the meeting, part of a yearlong celebration. The year 2010 marks the Bicentennial of the beginning of Mexican independence, and the Centennial of the outset of the Revolution.

An encased flag of Mexico, handcrafted by officials of the Secretary of the Navy of Mexico, was presented to the City of Sonoma as a symbol of friendship of the Mexican Government and the Mexican community to the government and the people of the City of Sonoma.

Felix also presented a proclamation that read in part, “The profound friendship of Mexico and the City of Sonoma has been enriched over time and will be further strengthened in years to come.”

The dedication also acknowledged Mexico and California’s indissoluble cultural, social and economic ties. “The most important value of the strong relationship,” the document said, “is the bicultural family that has been consolidated during the past two centuries.”
