False alarm at downtown bank

Posted on February 3, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

A call that had Sonoma police, some with guns drawn, flanking Sonoma Bank on Thursday afternoon turned out to be a false alarm.

At least six officers responded to 135 W. Napa St. at about 2:15 p.m. and took up observation positions.

It was a standard response to a bank alarm, an officer said. “You have to treat them as real,” he said. “You never know what’s going to happen.”

After a bank employee emerged to brief one deputy, several officers entered the building. Several minutes later, they exited and confirmed it had been a false alarm and that all was well inside the bank.

Auto and pedestrian traffic along Spain St. were not interrupted during the episode.
