A “humbled and honored” John Donnelly, right, accepts the Rotary Club Conservation Award from Rotary Club President Chip Allen at the Arbor Day celebration on Sonoma Plaza.
Donnelly was saluted for his work to bring about and maintain the city’s Overlook Trail, and other environmental causes.
The March 11 gathering was marked by the addition of a Red Sunset maple tree to what host Tom Rusert called “the significant and almost sacred space that is the Plaza.” The tree, which was covered with dirt shoveled by event attendees including group of Girl Scouts, will bring vivid red and orange colors to the northeast corner every fall.
“The Plaza is our own neighborhood forest,” said Mayor Laurie Gallian, who said she decided to move to Sonoma after enjoying a picnic in the square.
