As the brooding protagonist, Heathcliff, Lawrence Olivier is as cold and bitter as the English weather, with only memories of his love for Cathy (Merle Oberon) to keep him warm. The 1939 film “Wuthering Heights,” based on the classic Emily Bronte novel, screens March 21 (at 7 p.m.) and 23 (at 1 p.m.) at the Sebastiani Theatre.
Nominated for seven Academy Awards, it won but a single Oscar, for cinematographer Gregg Toland, who would famously lens Citizen Kane two years later. Here, he renders Oberon luminescent, and captures the countryside and Olivier’s furrowed brow – both equally craggy – with lush dexterity. Tickets are $8. Sebastianitheatre.org.
