Sonoma’s Cultural and Fine Arts Commission (CFAC) has awarded its 2011 Creative Arts Award to 17-year-old musician, songwriter and artist Sarah Summers.
“Music provides me a way to connect with people,” Summers said in her application, “be it the children at Rhoten summer camps through overzealous Taylor Swift covers or in a more intimate setting with my dearest friends.”
The award includes a $2,000 honorarium.
The annual Creative Arts Award program is open to Sonoma Valley students, ages 16-22 working and demonstrating unusual promise in the visual, literary or performing arts. The panel received a total of twenty-one entries this year.
“It was an extremely difficult decision to make because so many talented students applied,” said CFAC Chair Lorna Sheridan.
In addition to her talents as a singer and a songwriter, Summers plays guitar, banjo, and dulcimer. She also submitted entries in the contest’s visual arts category, including her own CD cover.
“I have plans to record all my songs professionally and put myself out into the online music world and to play to live shows at greater venues,” she said.
There are some people in New York City who are very proud of Sarah and those people would be Lily Ganser, Georgia Ganser, Janet Bogardus and LJ Ganser. We can not think of anyone more deserving of the award. Way to go Sarah!
