A funny, candid tale of an unlikely convert

Posted on April 1, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The story of an unexpected and terribly inconvenient Christian conversion, told by a very unlikely convert, the book “Take This Bread” was not only a spiritual memoir but also a call to action.

Raised as an atheist, Sara Miles lived an enthusiastically secular life as a restaurant cook and writer. Then early one morning, for no earthly reason, she wandered into a church. “I was certainly not interested in becoming a Christian,” she said. “Or, as I thought of it rather less politely, a religious nut.”

But she ate a piece of bread, took a sip of wine, and found herself radically transformed. Miles, director of Ministries at St. Gregory’s of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, and founder and director of their Food Pantry, will speak in Sonoma on Sunday, April 2, at 3 p.m. at the Trinity Church, 275 E. Spain.

Miles’ latest work is “Jesus Freak,” an account of faith that Publishers Weekly calls “moving, compelling, provocative.” Annie Lamott called Sara Miles “amazing, a wild, unique, funny Christian.”
