The county’s first community garden, a pilot project more than two years in the planning, is coming to Larson Park in Boyes Hot Springs.
The action caps a long-term effort to team public and private resources to create easier access to healthy, locally grown foods, said First District Supervisor Valerie Brown.
“The Larson Park Community Garden will be a beacon for the entire county,” she said.
The garden will provide 40 to 60 families a place to grow healthy food. The design consists of 950 square feet of planting space with 23 planting boxes.
The total cost is estimated at $30,000, including volunteer contributions valued as $13,000. Nuestra Voz and the Springs Community Garden Coalition have pledged resources to fund the garden construction through grants, fundraising and donations.
Part of the Sonoma County Regional Parks system, Larson Park is located on DeChene Avenue. It currently offers tennis courts and hardball courts, baseball and multi-use fields, a children’s playground, picnic tables and restrooms.
