Word is that the prominent lot at Broadway and MacArthur, longtime home of Sonoma Truck and Auto, is already sold. That didn’t take long, even if the cost dropped a bit from the original sticker price of $2.35 million. The intended buyer, Village Properties, has a long track record of brokering sites for Walgreens stores. That rumor should be enough to revive the debate about big box/chain stores coming to town. The City Council is still kicking the tires on new regulations on the issue.
Good mojo in Patrick Hoffman’s dojo: Sonoma Taekwondo hosts its annual Kick-a-Thon on July 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a fundraiser for The Anova Center for Education, which provides services for children and families with autism.
Happy Bastille Day! There will be no parade, but at least raise your double latte in salute to French independence day. The Valley of the Moon Petanque Club holds its celebration on Sunday with the Grand Concours de Petanque Tournament, on the courts at Depot Park. Grill-Roasted Leg of Lamb with Dried Cherry Rosemary Sauce, White Bean Puree with Summer Vegetables… not to question hot dogs and hamburgers or anything, but those French sure know how to picnic. See vompc.org for more. Meanwhile, somebody get me a croissant.
Funding to complete the (endless) Highway 12 upgrade is in place, but the Springs Redevelopment Advisory Committee can’t count on much else. With the state putting the pinch on redevelopment agencies – demanding a hefy “opt-in” fee to keep operating – drawing-board project such as developing the Vailetti and Clemente Inn sites are in limbo. Funds for façade improvement and even affordable housing are also on ice, pending the final word from Sacramento.
