Will Pier, who lost the 2008 election by less than 1,300 votes, has announced another run for First District Supervisor.
“I am a candidate in 2012,” he told The Sun.
His announcement Wednesday included a challenge to his opponents to limit campaign expenses and wait until next spring to begin hard campaigning.
Pier, 68, a Sonoma ecologist, teacher and former contractor, lost to incumbent Valerie Brown in the 2008 election. “I ran a successful grass roots campaign, winning 48.3 percent of the vote.”
Brown’s announcement last month that she will not seek reelection makes it a wide-open race.
Declared challengers include Gina Cuclis and Mark Bramfitt, both of Sonoma Valley. Santa Rosa City Councilmembers Susan Gorin and John Sawyer have shown interest, particularly now that the redrawn First District has added more of Santa Rosa to its traditional Sonoma Valley base.
Pier’s said he is more interested in debates and meeting voters than raising money. In the 2008 race, he raised and spent $41,000, compared to Brown’s $140,000.
“I challenge all other candidates to hold their campaign expenses to a maximum of $50,000,” Pier said. “I challenge all other candidates to give everyone living in the First District a break by starting their campaigning in March for the June Primary Election, and in August for the November Runoff election.”
“No more huge signs cluttering our landscapes and roadways, he said. “I’m looking forward to good debates, and knocking on doors in March.”
