“On the Waterfront” is the hard-edged 1954 film with Marlon “I could have been a contender” Brando as a failed boxer who takes up the fight against the crooked union bosses. With Rod Steiger, Karl Malden, Eva Marie Saint and Lee J. Cobb. At the Academy Awards, the flick was more than a contender, it was the champ: eight Oscars, including best picture, director (Elia Kazan) and, for lead actor, Brando.
