Bike lane project begins

The City of Sonom’s Comprehensive Bike Lane and Signing Project begins Monday (10/24) and is expected to be completed by mid-November.

The following street segments are included in the project:

· Fifth Street West between West MacArthur and West Napa Street (Class II Bike Route) (including two lighted and audible crosswalks near Sassarini Elementary School);
· West Macarthur Street between Broadway and Fifth Street West (Class II Bike Route);
· Second Street East between MacArthur Lane and the Sonoma Bike Path (Class III Bike Route);
· Third Street West between Arroyo Way and West Spain Street (Class III Bike Route);
· Oregon Street between Studley Street to Seventh Street West (Class III Bike Route);
· Seventh Street West between Oregon Street and West Napa Street (Class III Bike Route);
· Curtain Lane between Seventh Street West and Fifth Street West (Class III Bike Route).

A Class II Bike Route is formally defined as a restricted right-of-way along a street designated for the exclusive or semi-exclusive use of bicycles, identified by pavement markings and signage. A Class III Bike Route highlights a recommended bike route through the use of signage. There is no separate striped bike lane, so bicyclists are expected to use the travel lane.

No streets will be closed during construction; however, street parking may be restricted on Fifth Street West (between West MacArthur Street and West Napa Street) and on West MacArthur Street (between Broadway and Fifth Street West) during the period of Nov. 5-9.

As a result of the project, parking will be removed on the following street segments:

· Fifth Street West (35 total spaces removed: 4 spaces on the east side of the street, immediately south of Andrieux Street; on the west side of the street, 13 spaces removed just south of Andrieux Street, and 18 spaces removed between the southernmost driveway of DeAnza Moon Valley and Smith Street);
· West MacArthur Street (84 spaces removed on the south side of the street).

During construction, please be aware of heavy equipment and construction personnel and follow instruction of the contractor’s flaggers and signs. Noise levels may be temporarily increased during construction.

The city aims to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible for the duration of the project.

Any questions or special coordination needs should be directed to Wendy Atkins, City of Sonoma Planning Department, at (707) 938-3681. For inquiries related to construction issues, please contact Brad Adams, Chrisp Company at (510) 719-6456.
