“The Power of Grateful Seeing and Effective Communication” is the topic for Angeles Arrien, the cultural anthropologist and author speaking in Sonoma on Thursday, Feb 9 at the Sonoma Community Center.
The event is the second of a series, presented by the Praxis Peace Institute, on conflict resolution, boundary setting, and respectfully dealing with difference. takes place at 7 p.m. at the Sonoma Community Center,
Grateful seeing and effective communication are necessary aspects of resolving all types of conflicts, according to Praxis Director Georgia Kelly. “Participants will experience cross-cultural tools and practices that enable effective and creative problem solving.”
Arrien lectures and conducts workshops worldwide, bridging cultural anthropology, psychology, and comparative religions. Her work has been used in medical, academic and corporate environments. Her books include “The Four Fold Way, Signs of Life” (winner of the 1993 Benjamin Franklin award).
“The four ways reflect a pervasive belief that life will be simple if we practice four basic principles,” explains Arriens. “Show up or choose to be present, pay attention to what has heart and meaning, tell the truth without blame or judgment, and be open, rather than attached to, the outcome.”
Her other works include “The Second Half of Life” (winner of the 2007 Nautilus Award for the best book on ageing) and the recent “Living in Gratitude.”

The talk was excellent and very inspiring, however the time of the event was incorrect in the paper as it didn’t start until 7:30 pm
