Join Sonoma Girl Scouts as they celebrate 100 years of scouting on Monday, March 12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Plaza Amphitheatre. Held on the official birthday of Girl Scouting – March 12, 1912 – the celebration is open to everyone and current scouts invite the community at large as well as all Girl Scout alumni to take part in the short yet historic event – one of many happening all across the country.
The hour-long ceremony promises plenty of activity including a Sonoma City Proclamation by Sonoma Mayor Joanne Sanders recognizing the 100th anniversary of Girls Scouts. Additionally, among others, Girl Scout alumni will lead participants in the traditional song “Girl Scouts Together.”
The celebration is sponsored by local Sonoma Valley Service Unit 103 who promise a night to remember as women move into the next 100 years of Girl Scouts!

Making dreams come true
The Ambassador Girls Scouts of Troop 10020 are Europe-bound this summer – a dream come true for a troop that has worked hard to make this fantasy become reality.
As a troop, the girls – Aundrea Mallory, Alicia Garstecki and Jonell Martinez – began saving to travel in 2004 with the initial goal being a trip to Japan. The scouts sold cookies and fall products, including nuts and magazines, saving almost all of their funds to apply toward international travel.
In 2006, Troop 10020 started participating in the annual Christmas Tree recycling program, earning extra funds. In addition, they also helped run fundraiser booths with other Girl Scout troops at the Vintage Festival and Fourth of July celebrations on the Plaza. The troop also ran some events for local Girl Scout troops, making extra money by collecting fees for their services. And, rather than spend the money they earned, troop parents elected to pay out of pocket for the girls to attend events such as Girl Scout camp, allowing the scouts continue to save and accomplish their goal of international travel.
As travel time neared, natural disasters in Japan derailed the girls’ initial plans of seeing the Far East. They decided instead to travel to Europe and will see France, Switzerland, Italy and England over the course of their 11-day trip this summer. Truly, a dream come true.
Culture club
Girl Scout Cadette Troop 10032 hosted World Thinking Day 2012, an annual event designed for Girl Scouts around the world to think about one another and their contributions to their communities around the globe.
On a recent Sunday, some 200 girls and leaders came together during the international festival at Altimira Middle School. Ten troops presented country booths with foods, crafts and games from their selected countries. In addition to the booths, highlights included the unveiling of a long Golden Chain of International Friendship with a link for each of the 145 nations where Girl Scout programs are offered. Troop 10032 also served a giant 100th-year cake crafted with Tootsie Pops to celebrate the 100th anniversary of girl Scouting.
