Plan C?

The back-up power source for the county’s 911 system is a turkey. The unit, a $10k per month rental, failed to kick in Sunday night during a short power failure. When the Emergency 911 computers in the Sheriff’s Office crashed, including those taking calls for Sonoma Valley, dispatchers resorted to taking notes manually and contacting officers by phone. The initial blackout was caused by a turkey flying into some power lines. It’s too late for the turkey, but that rental contract needs some attention. The Easter Bunny, who has really big feet, by the way, must have stepped in wet paint on his way to The Sun office. Left behind: two large footprints and some candy. Thank you, Mr. Bunny. The next round of wheatgrass juice is on us!

Add to this weekend’s Sonoma International Film Festival screenings the new music video by The Whiskey Thieves. “Stars Above,” shot locally and directed by Jake Janghoff, is part of the festival’s Sixth Sense Shorts Program at Vintage House on Friday, April 13 (1 p.m.) and again Sunday (3:30 p.m.). The boys then go live with a music set at the closing night party. After that, likely more celebratory ‘playing’ at a nearby Plaza watering hole…Meanwhile, guitarist Clay Hawkins, appearing at Hopmonk Tavern on Friday night, sounds like an interesting guy. Born into a household of professional rodeo cowboys, he credits his career to “the discovery of the electric guitar, classic rock and the life sustaining qualities of top roman noodles, alcohol and credit cards.”

Drunk of the week: the Sonoma man, 42, whose failure to negotiate a turn from First Street West onto Andrieux slammed his Toyota Tundra into two parked cars. Crunch. The errant driver told police that he had been eating Chinese food in San Francisco at 11 p.m. but had not consumed any alcohol. Two problems. It was only about 9:30 p.m., and he tested out at a .20 blood alcohol level. His next meal was in the county jail.

The 1st District Supervisor candidates mixed and mingled at a Chamber of Commerce event Tuesday night at the Sonoma Mission Inn. “It’s great to have so many candidates in the race,” allowed one hungry guest. “Then again, they’re eating all the food.”
