A hill of beans

Word is brewing that Peet’s Coffee is coming to town, in the 500 block of Broadway to be specific. The location falls just outside the city’s historical zone, so the chain store ordinance does not apply. It is also across the street from the Old Fire Station, the development of which was once said to include a Peet’s outlet. The neighborhood response to that (or any other) proposal was as cold and bitter as yesterday’s French roast. So, reading the green tea leaves, Peet’s instead set its sights on the nearby space… The Design Review Commission will have to approve any and all signage for the building. Where were they when it was painted that unsightly mustard color?

Members of the group Sonoma County Residents Responsible About Pit Bulls, dogs and all, were set to visit Sonoma on Wednesday evening. Luckily for the PR effort, Bob Edwards noted the outing was originally set for the Plaza, where dogs are not allowed. He suggested that behind the Barracks would be a more suitable rallying point. A better photo opp for a breed that could use some good press.

Paper or paper? The Sonoma City Council is on board a countywide ban of plastic bags at retail check stands. Could start in July of next year, when, unless you bring your own tote, you’ll start paying 10 cents (it started at 25 cents; the stores keep the money) for every paper bag used to pack up your purchases. Even the stuff wrapped in plastic.

Andy Weinberger notes a survey that, in the advent of an invasion from outer space, 65 percent of respondents said Barack Obama is the best man to deal with it. “So when the flying saucers appear over the Washington Monument and the electrical grid gets fried, most of us will sleep easy as long as Barack is in the White House.”

Prayers, smiles and good thoughts for our friend and colleague Joan Huguenard. ‘Just Joan’ is in a Palo Alto care facility, surrounded by her children and reflecting on her wonderful life. Send her a short email bouquet.
