Things to do before going to college: pack, update Facebook profile, check out class schedule, play live concert at the Sonoma Community Center. Local rising star Sarah Summers is not your average 18-year-old. Before heading off to her freshman year at UCLA., the gifted singer/songwriter will perform at Andrews Hall on Monday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
Summers has accepted a scholarship from the university’s prestigious School of World Arts and Culture.
While other teens were downloading their tunes, the city’s Student Creative Arts Award winner was writing hers. “Almost all of my songwriting is inspired by the relationships I have developed with both the town and its occupants,” she said, calling her hometown “a tightly-woven community that fondly nurtures the arts and those who pursue them.”
The upcoming concert will benefit the Sonoma Valley Rotary’s $100,000 matching grant to revitalize the historic Andrews Theater. “I performed once before at Andrew’s Hall and loved the more formal setting,” she said. “It’s a great change from the bars and restaurants I normally perform in.”
Sarah will leave Sonoma with many memories, as she puts it “I will remember Sonoma as a tightly-woven community that fondly nurtures the arts and those who pursue them.
